DAY ONE

DEPARTURE

Arrived at Manchester Airport at 03.30, met With Other Agents, and flew with Jet2. We arrived in Athens and transferred to the port town of Rafina. Here, we stayed overnight and held an orientation to discuss the upcoming week's itinerary and learning objectives.

A moderate level of fitness is essential for this tour. Travelling by ferry requires managing your own luggage, including carrying it up ramps, storing it below deck, and climbing stairs to the passenger areas. Ferries offer refreshments, shops, and comfortable seating upstairs. Still, mobility and stamina are key throughout the trip, especially on consecutive days of hiking.

DAY TWO

FERRY TO SANTORINI & CALDERA PREVIEW WALK

We embarked on a six-hour ferry crossing to Santorini and checked into the Golden Star Hotel in Fira. In the afternoon, we walked through Fira town and along part of the Caldera trail to preview the route we would hike the following day. The views of the Caldera and volcanic cliffs offered a dramatic introduction to the island's geography.

DAY THREE

CALDERA TRAIL - FIRA TO OIA

Our guide, Thanos, took us to a local bakery before the hike to stock up on sandwiches and bottled water, as there are no shops along the Caldera trail. We completed the full 10-kilometre Caldera Trail from Fira to the picturesque village of Oia.

The Hike followed a stunning cliffside path offering panoramic views of the Aegean Sea, volcanic islands, and traditional whitewashed villages. We stopped midway to picnic at a scenic roadside spot. We enjoyed freshly squeezed orange juice arranged by our guide, a welcome refreshment under the hot sun. This was the longest and most demanding hike of the trip.

DAY FOUR

KAMARI VISIT & FERRY TO NAXOS

We visited the seaside resort of Kamari for a morning of cultural exploration and shopping. Kamari is a village on the southeast coast, known for its black sandy beach and vibrant nightlife. In the evening, we took a ferry to Naxos, which took 1 hour 35 minutes, passing Mykonos en route. Upon arrival, we checked into Aeolis Hotel in Naxos, a charming, traditional hotel with a homely feel, small pool, and excellent breakfast featuring home-baked cakes and quality coffee.

DAY FIVE

BYZANTINE TRAIL ON PAROS

In the morning, we took a ferry to Paros (approx. 1-hour crossing), followed by a 20-minute bus ride to Lefkes village. From there, we hiked the 9km Byzantine Trail through Cycladic and medieval towns, experiencing the island's historical and rural beauty. The path provided an immersive experience of the island's historical and architectural heritage. We then returned to Naxos by ferry in the evening.

DAY SIX

TRAGEA VALLEY HIKE & NAXIAN HERITAGE

We hiked through the Tragea Valley, a region known for its ancient olive groves and citrus trees. We continued to the Naxian marble quarries.

We visited the Kouros of Apollonas, a monumental statue from the 5th century BCE. We had a lovely lunch in the mountains, with stunning views and local traditional food.

This day offered rich insight into the agricultural and sculptural traditions of Naxos.

DAY SEVEN

HORA TOWN & THE TEMPLE OF APOLLO

Our final full day on Naxos included a walking tour of Hora town, featuring its Venetian architecture and the remains of the Temple of Apollo. This experience connected the layers of History present on the island.

DAY EIGHT

RETURN TO ATHENS AND VISIT THE ACROPOLIS

We boarded a six-hour ferry to Piraeus, then returned to Athens, where the tour officially ended. With an extra night in Rafina, I took the metro into central Athens (2 euros) to visit the Acropolis and the surrounding historic areas.

We enjoyed dinner in town, then returned to Hotel Avra in Rafina for the night. The tour ends in Piraeus Port, but we highly recommend an extension in Athens for 2 Nights. Athens is the capital city of Greece, known for its ancient History, iconic landmarks and vibrant modern culture.

WHO WOULD THIS TRIP BE SUITED TO?

Hikers, Middle-Aged Customers. The trip demanded stamina, especially under the warm Mediterranean sun, which is why Exodus does not offer this itinerary in the peak heat of July and August.

However, the combination of guided walks, scenic landscapes, and cultural insights made it both intellectually and physically rewarding. Personal highlights included the Caldera trail's dramatic views, the peaceful atmosphere of Paros, and the olive groves of Naxos.

FAVOURITE HOTEL VISITED AND WHY?

Golden Star in Fira. It's small and Friendly, with rooms just off the lovely pool, and hand-delivered breakfasts to the room. It's a great Location for Fira.

ACCOMMODATION AND MEALS

The tour was on a bed-and-breakfast basis. Evening meals were either arranged by the guide or enjoyed independently, offering flexibility. Aeolis Hotel in Naxos stood out for its warm hospitality, local food, and relaxing pool, perfect for a post-hike dip.

FAVOURITE RESTAURANT VISITED?

Elliniko Steak Restaurant Naxos Waterfront! Amazing food

GENERAL COMMENTS AND TIPS:

This visit offered a rich understanding of the cultural landscapes, historical sites, and natural features of three Cycladic islands. Each trail revealed something different, from local History to traditional village life and sustainable tourism practices.

The Caldera hike in Santorini was a major highlight, providing spectacular views and a fascinating geological context. Walking the Byzantine path in Paros created a strong connection to the island's medieval past. At the same time, the Tragea Valley hike in Naxos offered an authentic experience of the Greek countryside.

Overall, the mix of physical activity and educational content made the trip both engaging and memorable, and the organisation throughout was excellent.

AIRLINE COMMENTS:

We flew with Jet2. It was a really easy process with online check-in and bag drop!

BEST EXPERIENCE FROM THE TRIP?

The Complete Greek Experience! It was fantastic to have a local Guide the whole trip, who knew all the History, the best places to eat, and local knowledge! We didn't miss anything.
